Held at the Cape Town International Convention Centre, Design Indaba Expo is slowly becoming one of the biggest curated design event in the Southern Hemisphere with more than 30 000 visitors each year. The event was envisioned as a “dynamic platform for designers and creative businesses to showcase their wares and market themselves to the general public and industry buyers“. This is not just a place where one can observe the latest trends in interior and industrial design. Visitors here can attend events in the fields of advertising, craft, fashion, new media, publishing, visual art and jewellery design.
The opulent city of Dubai will once again be home to the leading fair in the Middle East and South Asia dedicated to collectible and limited edition furniture and design objects. Design Days Dubai will welcome from international designers to exhibit their creations and share their ideas with the thousands of visitors. Milan Furniture Fair has a history dating back to 1961, when the Salone del Mobile first opened its doors to promote Italian furniture and furnishing accessories for the export market. The 2013 edition of the event gathered 285,698 trade operators (more than half of them participating from different countries), over 38,000 members of the general public and 6,578 members of the press. Javits Convention Center, the 26th annual International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF) will “lure those in determined pursuit of design’s timely truths and latest trends to an encyclopedic exhibition of up-to-the-moment offerings, as well as a series of fascinating, fun, edifying programs, and a packed schedule of exhibits and features.” In 2013, the event gathered 570 exhibitors from 31 countries, promoting their work in furniture, carpet and flooring, lighting, materials, wall coverings, accessories, textiles, kitchen and bathroom.
Rooms Moscow / MIFS also known as The Russian Interior Show is a major event delivered for the Russian and Eastern European design jugglers. It is addressed to all furniture producers and suppliers worldwide seeking access to the Russian market and to all visitors who would love to see Moscow in an innovative light. The fair is at its second edition and welcomes guests to discover creative home and office furniture, kitchen and appliances, bath and outdoor solutions.
Entering its 5th year in 2014, Clerkenwell Design Week London is an independent design festival aiming at gathering together leading UK and international brands in a series of showroom events, pop-up exhibitions and special installations. Boasting over 60 showrooms, a wealth of creative businesses and “more architects per square mile than anywhere else on the planet“, the event is dynamic and triggers involvement. Local resident design showrooms (including high-end contract furniture, lighting, kitchen and bathroom brands) also take part in the fair.
The Serbian capital will be the center of the European design scene, starting at the end of May. Belgrade Design Week built its reputation on talks and presentations from leading architects and designers. The enthusiasm of the small team of organizers behind the BDW with almost no state support is what makes the event truly special: “It’s completely privately run, and it’s completely one-to-one in its relationships – it’s kind of like a family affair, where everybody is instantly local upon arrival, rather than a business affair like Milan or the London Design Festival,” stated BDW chairman Jovan Jelovac.
The 12th edition of DMY International Design Festival aims at converting the historic Berlin Tempelhof airport into an unforgettable design venue. For anyone choosing to celebrate the beginning of summer in Berlin, DMY will be the stage for various design happenings, such as conferences, workshops and night events: “Participants and visitors will be given an opportunity to get involved into the big picture, to learn and share ideas and, last but not least, to present their work“, the organizers asserted.
Reaching its seventh edition, Design Month Graz is organized in collaboration with a cluster of organizations, enterprises, institutions, museums, festivals, galleries and shops. The event highlights on the importance of the creative industries in Austria. In 2013, more than 75 000 visitors attended the fair, being actively present at exhibitions, various discussions and conferences.
Over 100 000 visitors attended Paris Design Week in September 2013, an event where visitors can enjoy quality design exhibitions, cocktail parties, encounters and innovations. Last year offered some interesting thematic itineraries through Paris, based on themes such as Art & Design, Design Digital, Design & Architecture. Paris Design Week will again closely follow interior fair Maison et Object. M&O also happens in Paris in January (24th to 28th Jan 2014) and in Singapore in March (10th to 13th Mar 2014).
The five day exhibitions at Furniture China in Shanghai are known for promoting design creativity not just in Asia, but all over the world. Besides the key Chinese furniture players, around 292 overseas companies participated as exhibitors in 2013, including pavilions from France, Belgium, Italy, Spain, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Sweden and Thailand. From what it seems, this event is not just an opportunity to exchange design ideas, but a cultural experience altogether.
London will take center stage in the world of design again in mid-September, when hundreds of events are expected to light up the creative skies of the city. According to the organizers, the London Design Festival was conceived by Sir John Sorrell and Ben Evans: “Building on London’s existing design activity, their concept was to create an annual event that would promote the city’s creativity, drawing in the country’s greatest thinkers, practitioners, retailers and educators to a deliver an unmissable celebration of design“. Important trade shows like 100% Design and Decorex are also associated with the festival.
Design as both a commercial and cultural entity is a concept that stood at the basis of this event held every two years in Kortrijk, Belgium: “Since 1968, the Biennale Interieur is internationally recognized as the only event in its kind to balance the need for commercial performance with the significance of a convivial cultural happening. The Biennale Interieur has become an important meeting place to experience trends, tastes, avant-garde and movements that define design today“. 84 000 visitors are expected in 2014- mostly professionals and design enthusiasts from France, The Netherlands and Germany.
During Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven, guests can witness smart solutions and inventive design, shaping up the future trends in the industry. Here is an open invite from the organizers: Starting October, “the doors are open to the future in a city that for nine full days is buzzing with innovation and creative energy. Get inspired by the latest work of more than 2,000 designers, meet the designers and experience the beauty and power of Dutch design“. Last year, the event gathered 250 000 participants.
In celebration of design culture and commerce, Design Miami/ gathers the most influential collectors, designers, curators and critics from around the world under one major event: “Design Miami/ is more than a marketplace for design. Each show balances exclusive commercial opportunities with progressive cultural programming, creating exciting collaborations with designers and design institutions, architecture, art and fashion, and unique commissions from the world’s top emerging and established designers and architects“. The event is also held in Basel, Switzerland each June.
